Position Summary
The Pharmacy Assistant supports the pharmacist and pharmacy team in providing safe, efficient, and customer-focused pharmacy services. This position is responsible for assisting with prescription processing, inventory management, customer service, administrative duties, and maintaining a clean and organized pharmacy environment.
The Pharmacy Assistant works under the direction and supervision of the pharmacist and follows all applicable pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Prescription & Pharmacy Support
Receive and process prescription orders accurately and efficiently.
Enter prescription information into the pharmacy computer system.
Prepare and package medications as directed and under appropriate supervision.
Assist pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with prescription workflow.
Prepare prescription labels, auxiliary labels, and other required documentation.
Answer routine questions from patients and direct clinical or medication-related questions to the pharmacist.
Assist with prescription pick-up, delivery, and customer transactions.
Maintain patient confidentiality and handle personal health information appropriately.
Customer Service
Provide friendly, professional, and respectful service to patients and customers.
Receive prescription requests and communicate with patients regarding prescription status.
Assist customers with over-the-counter products and refer medication-related questions to the pharmacist.
Process payments and operate the pharmacy point-of-sale system.
Resolve routine customer concerns or escalate them to the pharmacist or pharmacy manager when appropriate.
Inventory & Organization
Receive, unpack, check, and store pharmacy inventory.
Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering supplies and medications.
Check stock for expired, damaged, or recalled products as directed.
Maintain organized medication and supply storage areas.
Assist with inventory counts and stock reconciliation.
Keep work areas clean, safe, and organized.
Administrative Duties
Answer and direct telephone calls.
Assist with filing, scanning, faxing, and other pharmacy administrative tasks.
Maintain accurate records and documentation.
Assist with third-party billing and insurance information as required.
Follow established procedures for handling prescriptions, patient information, and pharmacy documentation.
Qualifications
Previous pharmacy, healthcare, retail, or customer service experience is an asset.
Pharmacy Assistant education or certification is preferred, where applicable.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Comfortable using computers and pharmacy-related software.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and move pharmacy inventory and supplies.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing, counting, labeling, and packaging.
Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy in a busy pharmacy environment.

Working Conditions
The Pharmacy Assistant works primarily in a retail or community pharmacy environment and may interact with patients, healthcare professionals, pharmacy staff, and members of the public. The position may involve working evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on pharmacy operating hours.
